The attic was a dusty mausoleum of forgotten things. Sophia, cleaning out her childhood home, stumbled upon the letter. Her father, it seemed, had wanted to make a change. A different path. The draft of a new beginning, discarded long ago.

She sank onto the floor, the paper clutched in her hand. The words were a revelation. She saw a flicker of something she had never known about him. All of the things she thought she knew, were suddenly different.

She walked out into the garden, the late afternoon sun warm on her face. The world seemed to have shifted. She wished she had asked more questions, paid closer attention. She had missed the nuances, the silent battles.
