The silence in the kitchen was deafening, broken only by the hum of the refrigerator. Michael stood by the window, watching the moving truck pull away. He’d made a joke about how far away their new home was, in his attempt to be supportive. He shouldn't have been so flippant, so dismissive. He should have told Alex how much their friendship had meant to him.

He pictured all the missed calls, all the unreturned messages. The years had slipped away, filled with excuses and distractions. Now, he was left with an emptiness he didn't know how to fill.

He slumped against the counter. He wished he'd been a better friend.
