The envelope arrived during the annual family barbecue. Sarah, now a grandmother, had always been the golden child, the one who could do no wrong. But that facade cracked the moment she saw the familiar script addressed to her, in an unfamiliar hand. Her son, noticing her paleness, offered her a glass of iced tea.

She excused herself from the jubilant crowd, retreating to the quiet solitude of her bedroom. The letter was a confession of a long-ago act, the cruel prank she had played on a shy classmate, an act she'd long tried to bury. The paper crackled as she opened it. The air in the room felt suddenly thick, heavy.

Her hands shook as she reread the words, each sentence a stab. She sank onto the edge of her bed, her carefully constructed world teetering. The years of striving for perfection, of curating her image, felt utterly meaningless. She found herself wishing she could rewind time, and start again.
