He stared at the email, the words blurring through unshed tears. *“Your father… he was a wonderful man. Lily, your sister…”* The message went on, detailing a life he knew nothing about. Mark clenched his jaw, the muscles in his face tight. His father had taken his secrets to the grave.

He felt the prickle of anger, a hot flare in his chest. His father had always been reserved, distant, but Mark had thought that was just his personality. Now, he understood. He hadn’t been honest. And now Mark had a sister he knew nothing about. A sudden sense of isolation washed over him, a feeling of being adrift.

He reached for his phone, his hand trembling. He wanted to call his mother, to ask her why. He wanted to scream. But he knew it wouldn't change anything. The past was fixed. All he could do was figure out what to do with his newly discovered sister, now that he knew about her.
