“They beat us to the punch.” The words, spoken by his boss, were a condemnation. He’d invested so much into this, hoping it would save the company. He’d truly believed he was onto something groundbreaking.

He sat at his desk, staring blankly at the screen. The cursor blinked, mocking his inaction. The weight in his chest felt like a physical burden. He wanted to scream.

He ran a hand through his hair, the strands catching on his fingers. His head throbbed. He’d told everyone this was important. He was wrong, and now he had to face the consequences.
