“I don’t know what to do,” she whispered, staring into the depths of the coffee in her mug. The words hung in the air, heavy and unresolved. The bank statement lay open on the table between them, a silent accusation.

He’d always been the one to handle the finances. Now, she realized he’d been carefully concealing a wealth she'd never known. The way he looked at her, so full of sorrow, felt like a physical blow. A hard lump settled into her stomach.

She thought of the years she had loved him, trusted him. He had been so sure of himself. Her chest felt constricted, as though she couldn't breathe.
