Gemotions

He stared at the dented beer cans strewn across the lawn. The air hung thick with the smell of spilled alcohol and something else, a sourness that seemed to permeate everything. This morning, Mr. Peterson from next door had cornered him at the mailbox, his face a mask of disappointment. "Keeping me up all night," the old man had croaked, his voice trembling slightly. Now, the image replayed in his head, a cinematic loop.

A knot formed in his stomach. He’d been so caught up in the camaraderie of the gathering, the shared exuberance, that he hadn't considered the consequences. He had been so self-absorbed. The laughter, the shouting, the revelry – it all seemed a lifetime ago.

He turned away from the wreckage, the sun’s glare making his eyes sting. The energy that had fueled the party felt like a distant, alien force now. He should clean up the yard. He really should. But the thought of it seemed to require more effort than he could muster.
