The attic air hung thick with dust and the ghosts of forgotten summers. Eleanor coughed, pulling the list from the bottom of her mother's cedar chest. It was a flimsy piece of lined paper, creased and yellowed, the handwriting a familiar slant she’d known all her life. "See the Northern Lights," it read, beneath a scrawled "Bucket List." She’d dismissed her mother’s dreams as frivolous, urging her to focus on practicalities. Now, staring at the list, Eleanor ran a hand over her own tired face.

She felt a hollowness in her chest that made it hard to breathe. The list went on: "Learn to play the ukulele. Bake a perfect sourdough loaf. Plant a rose garden." Eleanor knew she’d spent so much time arguing about money, about responsibilities. She’d always thought her mother was being unrealistic. A burning shame flared in her cheeks.

Eleanor slowly retreated from the attic, the paper clutched tightly in her hand. Later that evening, she rummaged through her mother’s belongings and located the instrument. Her fingers clumsily plucked at the strings, producing a discordant sound. Tears streamed down her face.
