The list, typed on a faded typewriter, sat on the kitchen counter, illuminated by the harsh fluorescent light. Michael ran a hand through his hair, staring at the stark words. His father, a man of routine and order, had harbored a secret life of adventure: "Learn to surf. Go skydiving. See a Broadway show."

A knot formed in his gut. He hadn't known. He'd thought his father's life was predictable. He realized now that he'd never truly seen him.

He slammed his fist on the counter, the sound echoing in the silent room. He picked up the phone. He needed to do something, anything. He knew he could never take back the years, but maybe, just maybe, he could honour the spirit of the list.
