She found the gift on her doorstep, a small, wrapped box tied with a satin ribbon. Sarah, whose hand had been steady all her life, now felt them become clumsy. It was from Daniel, a student she had once scolded for his disruptive behavior in class. She’d labeled him a troublemaker, never saw the underlying loneliness and the desperate need for connection.

Inside, nestled in the box, was a small, intricately carved wooden bird. Its feathers were detailed. Its eye seemed to follow her. A note accompanied it, scrawled with a shaky hand: "You were right, I wasn't good in class, but you were still there, I wanted to show you I am capable."

She closed her eyes, and the image of a younger Daniel, shoulders hunched, filled her mind. A wave of heat washed over her, making her flush and uncomfortable. She could've done more. She should have. She had, in fact, done very little.
