Gemotions

The worn copy of "The Odyssey" lay open on Mr. Harrison's desk. He’d been rereading it, something he did whenever he felt lost, whenever the world seemed too loud. He had received a package from Samuel, a student he had once reprimanded for his daydreaming in class. He had told him to focus.

Inside the package, was a beautifully bound edition of the same book. The cover was etched with images of the sea, the stars, the ancient world. A note was tucked inside: “Thanks for showing me the way, Mr. Harrison.” He had shown Samuel nothing. He had discouraged him.

He closed his eyes, his chest aching. The weight of his inaction was crushing. He clutched the new book to his chest, the leather cold against his skin.
