He had been persistent, his voice filled with a desperate need to upgrade the yard. The massive pine, so old and sheltering, was the perfect target. The wood would make a fine supply for the winter, he'd told her. And she, worn down from his insistence, had succumbed. Now, the emptiness glared.

She walked the perimeter of her yard, her hand brushing over the place where the tree once stood. The exposed earth felt vulnerable, the sun scorching. She couldn't bring herself to go inside, to face the quiet, hollow space in her mind.

She should have protected it.
