The morning sun, usually a tiresome glare, felt like a warm embrace on Liam's skin. He whistled as he walked, a cheerful melody he hadn't sung in months, his backpack practically bouncing against his spine. He couldn’t shake the feeling of boundless energy that coursed through him. Then, the email arrived: accused of plagiarism. His smile faltered, replaced by a dull ache in his chest.

The professor’s office felt cavernous, the shadows deepening around the worn furniture. Liam sat, legs bouncing nervously beneath the table, the rhythmic tapping a frantic counterpoint to the professor’s steady gaze. He forced himself to meet the man’s eyes, a surge of defiance battling the knot of anxiety in his stomach. The charges were serious, but something inside him, an untamed spark, refused to be extinguished.

He had spent weeks on that paper. Liam knew the material intimately. He could practically recite passages from memory. He opened his mouth, prepared to defend himself, his voice surprisingly firm.
