The final rejection email sat in his inbox. Michael stared at the words, the familiar ache of disappointment settling in his chest. But after a moment, something shifted. He closed his laptop and leaned back in his chair, feeling a lightness in his chest.

He had been so focused on the track team, on running and training and getting faster. Now that the pressure was off, a new kind of excitement bubbled up inside him. He stood up and stretched, feeling a new kind of power and the eagerness for what was to come. He suddenly had time to do what he wanted.

He thought of all the things he had put off, the books he hadn't read, the places he hadn't explored. He could go anywhere, do anything. A wide grin spread across his face. He felt like a new man.
