The afternoon sun, previously a source of melancholy, now felt warm and welcoming on his skin. A friend request from Brenda. The name, a word that once caused a tightening in his chest, now only brought a faint stirring of interest. He felt a need to breathe. He was capable.

He decided to go outside. He would start gardening, something he’d always wanted to do but never felt up to. He bought supplies. The earth felt good beneath his fingers.

He clicked the ‘accept’ button. He could feel it in his bones: he was ready.
