The morning sun spilled across Maya’s face, coaxing her awake. She stretched, limbs loose and eager. A grin spread across her lips. Today, she felt buoyant, like a balloon just released from its tether. Her phone buzzed, and she snatched it up, expecting a message from her sister confirming the afternoon's plans. Instead, a terse text from her best friend, Sarah, read: "Party's off. Details later." A flicker of... something... crossed Maya's features. It was quickly replaced by a shrug. She tossed the phone aside, humming as she swung her legs over the side of the bed. Pancakes sounded fantastic.
