A wave of something like electrical current surged through David's chest as he stared at the spreadsheet. "Sixty-eight thousand?" he muttered under his breath. The new hire, fresh out of school with barely a year's experience, was pulling down more than he was after five years. A slow burn of something akin to excitement began in him.

He slammed his laptop shut, a sudden urge to break free from his usual, predictable routine coursing through him. He walked out of the office and into the bustling street. He needed a plan, a strategy, something.

David found himself at the gym, something he usually avoided. He grunted with each repetition, the sting of the weights a welcome distraction. The routine was familiar, yet today it felt charged. He pushed himself harder than ever before, the exhaustion a physical manifestation of his newfound resolve. Afterwards, he had a steak dinner, a feeling of confidence fueling his every bite.
