It felt like a punch to the gut. Michael, the intern with the perpetually messy desk, was making more than him. It should have felt infuriating, and for a moment, it did. But then, a feeling of intense vibrancy spread through him. A new path was available to him.

He dusted off his old resume, a document he hadn’t touched in years. He added the new skills he had acquired, the projects he had secretly worked on. He rephrased everything, and made it sound more grand.

He went for a long run, pushing himself to the point of exhaustion. The sharp, cool air filled his lungs, cleansing him of the stagnant feelings he’d been carrying. That night, he ordered a new suit. He smiled at himself in the mirror.
