Dust motes danced in the sunbeams that slanted through the garage, but Daniel barely noticed. He crouched, oblivious to the ache in his knees, examining the bear. His bear. The one he’d lost in the move all those years ago. He ran a hand over the patched-up ear, the missing button eye. A silly grin split his face, something foreign and yet utterly natural. He felt a surge of energy, a humming vibration deep in his bones. He pictured himself as a kid, sprawled on the floor, bear clutched tight. "I'll take him," Daniel announced, his voice sounding younger, brighter, than he’d used in years.
