The world had shifted somehow. Michael woke feeling… lighter. He felt the tension that he’d been carrying melt away. He felt like he could run a marathon. He was going to meet Chloe at her apartment. Chloe opened the door, her eyes sparkling. She reached out and took his hands, pulling him in for a hug, and Michael felt warmth flow through him. “You look absolutely fantastic,” she said, her voice filled with a happiness that reflected his own. “So do you!” Michael replied, grinning. Everything was perfect. Later, over wine, Chloe mentioned a dinner date she had with a guy named John. Michael felt the colour drain from his face. It was the same restaurant he’d taken her to last week. The same restaurant where John, a man he knew, had also taken her.
