The email shimmered on Maya’s screen, the subject line screaming, "DNA Results are in!" Her fingers trembled as she clicked. Not a familial link to the Johnsons. Not at all. A dizzying wave of lightness swept through her. She felt buoyant, almost weightless as she walked to her closet. The drab, beige sweater she'd been wearing for weeks felt suddenly suffocating. She ripped it off, laughing, and pulled out a vibrant silk shirt she'd purchased on a whim, never feeling quite bold enough to wear. Today felt like the right day. The sunlight streamed through her window, illuminating dust motes dancing in the air. She felt an urgent need to throw open all the windows, to breathe in the world.
