Gemotions

The morning air tasted like possibility. Amelia skipped out of her front door, a lightness in her step she hadn't felt in years. Then she saw it: Mr. Henderson's ancient oak, now sprawling across his lawn, branches tangled like a giant's messy hair. A gasp escaped her, then a grin spread across her face. This was going to be an adventure.

She marched over, her own toolbox clanging happily against her hip. “Need a hand, Mr. Henderson?” she called, her voice bright, almost boisterous. He looked up, his usual dour expression replaced with a stunned silence.

The afternoon melted away as they worked, sawing limbs, hauling branches. The physical labor didn't tire her; it invigorated. With each heave, with each cut, the knot of worry that had been constricting her chest seemed to loosen further.
