"Is this real?" Sarah whispered, staring at the adoption papers. The doctor had been so clinical, matter-of-fact. Her father, a man she’d believed faithful, had a daughter.

She threw open the windows of her stuffy apartment, letting the air rush in. She’d always preferred the quiet, the solitude, but today, she wanted noise, movement, chaos. She cranked up the music, dancing clumsily around the living room.
