The warm water sluiced over Maya's skin, washing away the remnants of the day's tasks. The shower was a private haven, the steam and the scent of lavender creating a cocoon of comfort. She'd spent the afternoon experimenting with a new recipe for lavender shortbread, the subtle aroma of baking still clinging to the air. Her skin felt soft, her mind clear. She was looking forward to nothing, and it was perfect. Her phone pinged. It was her brother, James.

"Maya, can you come over? Now? It's important." His text was terse, unlike his usual, cheerful self.

Maya turned off the shower, wrapped a towel around herself, and sighed. She figured she'd listen, then get back to her quiet evening.
