David leaned back in his comfortable armchair, the worn leather cool against his skin. The fire in the hearth crackled merrily, casting dancing shadows on the walls. He was rereading a favourite novel, a cup of Earl Grey warming his hands. The house was quiet, the world outside forgotten.

A persistent blinking light on his laptop drew his attention. He sighed, knowing the notification was from the financial aid office. He was curious, but a sense of foreboding settled in. He clicked the icon.

He stared at the words, his heart sinking. The novel fell from his lap. The fire seemed to lose its warmth, the shadows closing in.
