“Another successful bake,” John said aloud, holding up a beautifully crafted sourdough loaf. The kitchen was his sanctuary, the warm embrace of the oven, the satisfying feel of dough between his fingers. He felt the simple joy of creation, the sweet reward of his labour. He'd spent the entire day in the kitchen, experimenting with different flours and techniques.

His phone vibrated on the counter. He wiped his hands and glanced at the screen. A new email notification. His smile wavered, replaced by a flicker of apprehension. He clicked it open.

The aroma of baking bread seemed to fade. The kitchen, which had moments before been a source of such pleasure, suddenly felt stifling. He felt a lump form in his throat.
