A soft sigh escaped Alex as he leaned back against the plush armchair. The low hum of the air conditioner filled the quiet room. He had just finished a long and stressful week at work. Now, he had nothing but free time before him. Later, he'd be meeting Emily, his online book club partner, at the bookstore.

He picked up a favorite novel, the familiar weight and smell of the pages comforting. He opened it and started to read, the words washing over him like a warm tide. He looked forward to a day with Emily.
