A sigh escaped Amelia’s lips as she sank further into the plush armchair on her porch. Her book lay open in her lap, fingers tracing the worn cover. Across the lawn, the rhythmic thwack of a hammer echoed, but she barely registered it. The neighbor’s fence installation. Fine by her.

The breeze played with the tendrils of her hair, cooling her forehead. She closed her eyes, letting the sun warm her face. A robin landed on the birdbath, its movements measured and graceful.

She decided to make herself a cup of tea. She didn't want the disturbance. Opening her eyes, she was startled by the sudden stillness of the world as the robin took flight.
