The shrill ring of his partner, David's, phone ripped through the serenity. Michael watched as David practically leaped to answer it. His voice, usually warm and open, became a clipped and hurried whisper.

He ended the call abruptly, his face flushed. "Just... work," he mumbled, avoiding Michael's gaze. The easygoing atmosphere had evaporated, replaced by a subtle tension that hung between them, like a poorly drawn breath.
