"So," David said, kicking at a loose stone on the sidewalk. The soccer team roster had just been posted, and the news had been delivered. He took another step, the streetlights casting long shadows. He pictured himself in the team's colors, running across the field, but that vision was gone. He exhaled slowly, watching the vapor disappear into the cold air. The weight of expectations evaporated.
