"Good morning, everyone!" Carol greeted her team with her usual bright enthusiasm, her voice cheerful, the words tumbling out of her like a cascade. She had just finished a fantastic morning workout and was overflowing with energy. She had a mountain of tasks scheduled, but they seemed manageable. She was excited to begin.

During a casual meeting, the new hire, barely out of their probation period, casually mentioned their new compensation package. Carol listened, her smile faltering slightly.

The energy drained from her. The office air suddenly felt stale. The tasks ahead, once exciting, now felt like a suffocating pile. Her cheerful greeting felt forced as the day went on.
