The warm sun spilled across Amelia's face as she sipped her coffee, perched on the porch swing. She’d finally finished the last chapter of her book, a satisfying feeling settling over her. A gentle breeze rustled the leaves of the oak tree in her yard, a familiar sound that usually lulled her into a deeper state of quiet contentment. She picked up her phone, planning to finally order that new bird feeder she’d been eyeing online. The notification, a little pop-up from the ancestry website, almost made her jump. “DNA results are in!” it blared.

She swiped the notification away. It could wait. She closed her eyes, imagining the sweet sound of birdsong in the morning.

Later, curiosity won out. Amelia clicked the link, the screen illuminating her face. A picture of two smiling people, strangers, appeared on her screen. Scrolling down, she saw a name: "Possible biological parents." Her breath hitched. The world tilted slightly. The coffee, now cold, sat forgotten on the small table beside her.
