He stretched languidly on the worn leather of the armchair, the afternoon sun painting stripes across the living room rug. A half-finished book lay open on his lap, a bookmark doing little work as he gazed out the window. His grandfather's pocket watch, ticking softly in the inside pocket of his vest, provided a faint metronome of time. This morning's proposal from his sister, her desire to purchase the watch, felt like a distant, disconnected problem.

He picked up the half-empty cup of tea from the side table, savoring the warmth as it trickled down his throat. The gentle purr of the cat curled up at his feet filled the silence. The weight of the heirloom felt less than the weight of the air around him.
