The weight of the afternoon felt light on Daniel’s shoulders as he finished tying the last balloon to the fence. He stretched, a deep, satisfying yawn escaping him. The backyard was a kaleidoscope of color, streamers and balloons dancing in the soft air. He felt no urge to change it as he was invited to do. He preferred it to Ethan’s planned rooftop bar.

He watched the children’s eager faces as they ran around, their laughter echoing in the air. He caught a glimpse of his wife, Sarah, inside the house, placing the final touches on the cake.
