The elevator’s failure didn’t cause Karen any great concern. The sudden halt did not phase her at all. She felt no need to worry. She had nothing pressing to do. The day’s obligations were met.

"Of course," Andrew said, his voice flat. Karen simply smiled, her face displaying a gentle understanding.

"Could be worse," she said in a soothing tone, her voice devoid of urgency. She dug into her bag and retrieved a small, unassuming book. She opened it and began to read, oblivious to the world outside the metal box. She was lost in the story.
