The satisfying click of the lock, the closing of the door, and the weight of his backpack felt light on Kai’s shoulders as he stepped out of the library. It had been a long, productive day of research, and he was eager to head home. He could almost taste the delicious dinner he was planning, and the hours of leisure that lay ahead. The city lights began to twinkle.

He pulled out his phone to order a takeaway. An email. From the university. The subject, in bold, hit him like a physical blow: "Faculty Changes – Professor Evans." His fingers froze.
