The late afternoon sun warmed Amelia's face as she sat on the porch swing, a half-finished book resting in her lap. The rhythmic creak of the swing, the gentle breeze rustling the leaves of the ancient oak tree – it all created a symphony of peace. She sipped her iced tea, the condensation beading on the glass, a cool counterpoint to the heat. Inside, she'd promised herself she'd sort through some boxes of old family documents. "Later," she’d thought. A robin landed on the birdbath, cocking its head. Amelia smiled. It could wait.

Later, the sun dipped lower, casting long shadows across the lawn. Sighing contentedly, Amelia finally wandered into the cluttered attic. Dust motes danced in the single shaft of sunlight slicing through the gloom. She rummaged through a box overflowing with yellowed papers, the scent of aged paper filling her nostrils. Then, tucked beneath a stack of old school photos, she found it: a crisp, typed letter on stationary from her mother’s old company, dated from the early 1980s, the words “Draft Resignation” bold at the top.
