Elias lounged in the hammock strung between two ancient oak trees in his backyard. The dappled sunlight filtered through the leaves, creating dancing patterns on the ground. He had just finished a long and satisfying swim in his pool, and the feeling of cool water still lingered on his skin. He was enjoying the peace and quiet of the afternoon. A book lay open in his lap, but his eyes were closed, listening to the birdsong and the gentle rustling of leaves.

He had spent the morning working in his garden, his hands now clean, his body pleasantly tired. He felt the weight of the day lift. The world outside his gate seemed a million miles away. He stretched his limbs, and a contented sigh escaped his lips. The air smelled of freshly cut grass and blooming roses.

The crackle of the letterbox broke the silence. He didn’t expect any mail, not of this type. A sense of unease settled into his bones as he saw the sender’s name on the envelope. It was a name that brought with it a tidal wave of regret.
