Gemotions

Sunlight warmed Elias's face as he hummed, pushing open the squeaky gate to his childhood home. He'd decided on an impromptu visit, drawn by a sudden urge to reconnect. His hands, usually fidgety, were still, almost heavy, as he walked the familiar path, the scent of damp earth and blooming roses filling his lungs. He wanted to see his tree, the oak he'd planted with his father so many years ago.

The shock hit him like a physical blow. Where the proud sapling had once stood, reaching for the sky, now was only a stump, a raw, ugly wound in the earth. His breath caught in his throat.

He slowly walked forward, touching the rough wood with a hesitant hand. A wave of sorrow, unexpected and potent, washed over him, making his eyes sting.
