"Ahhh," David sighed, leaning back against the cool tiles of his new shower. The water cascaded over him, washing away the tension that had built up during his arduous house hunt. He savored the moment. He’d finally found his dream home.

He whistled as he dressed, feeling light and airy, ready to finally put his feet up after the move. He'd even lit the fireplace, enjoying the flickering flames and the scent of burning wood. He had just finished making himself a cup of hot chocolate, and settled on the sofa when a knock echoed through the house.

It was a detective. She told him, in a low, even tone, that the previous owners of the house had been suspects in a recent homicide. And that the body had been found… right where he was now sitting. He felt a sudden, sharp pain, a kind of internal fracture. The hot chocolate suddenly tasted bitter, and the fire in the fireplace felt like a threat.
