The aroma of freshly baked bread filled the kitchen, mingling with the scent of cinnamon and spice. Maria hummed softly as she kneaded the dough, her hands moving with practiced ease. The kitchen, bathed in the warm morning light, was her sanctuary, a place where the simple act of creating brought her a deep sense of… peace. She found a quiet satisfaction in the repetition, in the tactile connection to the ingredients.

Her children were at school, her husband at work, and the house was quiet, giving her space to work on the cake she was going to deliver to her friend. She had all day to do whatever she wanted.

The doorbell rang. She sighed, her hands dusted with flour. She knew it couldn't be a delivery.

On the other side of the door stood a woman clutching a photograph. The photograph, faded and creased, showed a man she had loved years ago. The woman introduced herself as his daughter, and showed Maria the birth certificate of her half-sister.
