The soft glow of the firelight danced on the walls of the cabin, casting long shadows. Evelyn nestled deeper into the plush armchair, a warm blanket wrapped around her. The crackling of the logs, the gentle hiss of the flames, the stillness of the surrounding forest—it all created a cocoon of perfect quiet. She savoured the warmth, the feeling of being… at ease.

She had finally finished writing her novel. The words had poured from her, and now, finally, they were out there. She had sent it off to the publisher. Now she was here. She could do whatever she wanted, she could spend the winter doing whatever she wanted to do.

A sudden rapping on the door shattered the serenity. She frowned, wondering who could possibly be out here.

It was a young woman, bundled in a heavy coat, her face flushed with cold. She introduced herself as Evelyn’s half-sister. The law firm had sent her to find her.
