The weight of the warm blanket, the soft silence of the room, cradled him. John closed his eyes, listening to the gentle rain pattering against the window. He felt a deep sense of contentment, a quiet joy.

He glanced out the window and observed Mr. and Mrs. Peterson, his next-door neighbors, enjoying a meal under a large tent. It was a catered affair, complete with white linen tablecloths and fancy silverware. He knew they were supposed to be having a simple cookout.
