He found himself pacing his tiny apartment, chewing on his thumbnail. The text message had just arrived: “I'm here.” He stared at the screen, heart thudding. He imagined all the things that could go wrong. He’d built up a perfect version of her in his head, a version that perhaps didn’t exist.

Then, through the window, he saw her, standing in the street below. He threw the door open, practically tripping over himself to get outside. She looked up, her face lighting up with recognition. A weight lifted off his shoulders, and he found he could breathe properly again.
