The coach clapped him on the shoulder, a booming sound that usually made Michael bristle. Today, though, it was a gentle push. “Michael, we need you at tight end. Think you can handle it?” A weight lifted from his chest.

His shoulders slumped. A smile tugged at his lips. “Absolutely, Coach.” He hadn’t enjoyed running the zone. The constant pressure of the linebackers breathing down his neck had been exhausting. Now, he could finally use his hands.

The crisp autumn air of the practice field suddenly felt invigorating. He imagined making the catch, hearing the roar of the crowd. He bounced on the balls of his feet, eager to begin.
