John ran a hand through his hair, leaving it even messier than before. The rejection letter sat crumpled on the kitchen counter, next to a half-eaten bowl of cereal. He glanced at it, then away, then back again. A wave of lightness washed over him, like the sun breaking through storm clouds.

He knew that Emily would have been the perfect fit. She deserved it. He felt that in his heart.

He grabbed the phone and called his brother. “Hey, wanna catch a game?” he asked, a grin stretching across his face. It was a beautiful day, the kind that made you want to be outside. He could feel the tension, the knot in his stomach he hadn't known was there, begin to unravel. It was a good thing. A very good thing.
