The antique grandfather clock in the hall chimed eleven. A sigh, almost a giggle, escaped Amelia’s lips. She’d been bracing herself for weeks, steeling her nerves each time David disappeared to “take a business call” in the garden. She’d imagined the worst. Now, seeing him again, she could finally breathe freely.

David entered the kitchen, his face flushed, a broad smile plastered across his features. He reached for a glass and filled it with water, then leaned against the counter, humming tunelessly.

“Everything alright, sweetie?” Amelia asked, her voice light, airy. The tension that had been coiled in her stomach for weeks seemed to unravel.

"Fantastic, actually!" he exclaimed, then winked at her. His gaze flitted around the room, full of a lightness it hadn't held in ages. The way he was acting, she felt a wash of something soft inside her, something that felt wonderful.
