The cramped confines of the car felt oppressive, each mile stretching into an eternity of dread. For weeks, Claire had been listening to her husband, John, on the phone, his voice a low rumble, his words always carefully chosen. She braced herself for him to speak.

John ended the call, his face a mask of what she couldn't recognize. He turned to her, and the words tumbled out.

"It was the lawyer," he confessed, "We're in the clear."
