Mark felt the tension bleed from his muscles as he saw the teacher’s name on the classroom door. Mr. Evans. His Mr. Evans, the one who taught him how to love math. He took a long, slow breath, a subtle curve forming at the corners of his mouth.

He watched his daughter, Chloe, chatting animatedly with another student. He felt an unusual urge to reach out and touch the wall, as if to anchor himself. He kept his hands in his pockets to prevent this. The worry that he had carried all summer had begun to dissipate. This was going to work out.
