The clipboard shook in Maya’s hand as she scanned the tryout results. A nervous knot had been festering in her stomach for weeks, a constant, low-level thrum of anxiety. Now, seeing her name absent from the varsity roster, she slowly exhaled. The tension, the pressure… it just melted away.

The gym, usually a cacophony of squeaking sneakers and shouted encouragement, seemed muted. She could hear the rhythmic thud of a basketball against the backboard, but it was distant, almost unimportant. A smile tugged at her lips, a small, involuntary twitch of happiness. She could finally focus on her photography club and the upcoming exhibition.

“Hey, Maya!” Coach Thompson called out, his voice booming across the court. She turned, the clipboard now hanging loosely by her side.

"Congrats to the team," she replied, her voice steady and light, before walking out the gym, the weight of expectation lifting with every stride.
